How to Work Out Your Psychotype

A five-pass procedure: answer the four scales twice, score each from 0 to 100%, and resolve any letter that lands near the middle before you keep the code.

Pass one is the sitting. Use a forced-choice inventory in the MBTI Form M format — 93 items, two options apiece — and pace yourself at roughly 10 seconds per item, which puts the whole run at about 15 minutes. Answer as your off-duty self; the single most common error is answering as your job.

Pass two is the scoring. Each scale reports a preference clarity from 0 to 100%: a 70% T means 70 of 100 relevant answers favoured thinking over feeling. Write down all four percentages, not just the winning letters — the margins matter more than the code.

Pass three assembles the code from the winning poles in fixed order: E/I, then S/N, then T/F, then J/P. Pass four verifies it against the four-function stack described on the cognitive functions page: the dominant and auxiliary must sit in opposite attitudes, one introverted and one extraverted. If they do not, the letters were mis-scored.

Pass five is the confirmation run. Wait 2–4 weeks, sit the form again, and keep a letter only if the same pole wins both times. This single step filters out mood, fatigue and one-off circumstances.

Three named failures cover most bad results. The mid-scale tie — clarity near 50% — means undecided, so retest rather than force a letter. The social-mask drift — answering from a role — inflates E and J, so answer about unstructured free time. The J/P flip matters most for introverts, because their J/P letter marks the extraverted auxiliary; check the stack, not the letter. When you hold a stable code, compare it against all sixteen on the types table page.

  • Pass 1: 93 forced-choice items, about 10 seconds each, roughly 15 minutes
  • Pass 2: read four clarity scores, 0–100% per scale
  • Pass 3: assemble the code in fixed E/I, S/N, T/F, J/P order
  • Pass 4: verify the dominant–auxiliary opposite-attitude rule
  • Pass 5: retest after 2–4 weeks; keep only repeated winners
